Olympic Worksheets

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad are due to take place in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012.

The development of the Pencil Street teaching resources covering the Olympic Games started in September 2011, with the clear aim to provide quality Olympic teaching resources, rich in learning content for primary school classrooms.

Helping teachers by providing Olympic worksheets, which are cross-curricular and easily slotted into the timetable, but also fun in content was no small task.  Resources include and are not limited to:

• Olympic history worksheets
• Olympic geography worksheets
• Olympic maths worksheets
• Olympic comprehension literacy worksheets
• Olympic art and design activities

Pencil Street will also be providing Paralympic resources which will be available on the Pencil Street website during March 2012.

Holocaust Teaching Resources for KS2 Children

Today I had to upgrade the Pencil Street Holocaust teaching materials for KS2 history. I found this an emotionally difficult topic to cover.

However, I felt we should cover this very sensitive topic well. It is a vitally important, if not somewhat disturbing period of our history, which children should learn about. (The topic is normally covered in KS3 as part of the QCA schemes of work unit 19 – How and why did the Holocaust happen?)

With Holocaust Memorial Day in January and several requests by teachers to cover this section of World War II in greater depth, for KS2 children – I pray I have done the topic justice.

I could go off Christmas!

Having been developing Christmas resources since early October, would you believe we are now already reviewing our Easter, Olympic and Jubilee teaching resources. I thought Christmas had come and gone the other day and wished someone a Happy Easter!

Don’t get me wrong, I love making Christmas resources, but there is only so many times I can overhear the sound track to ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas! Which was a PowerPoint one of the designers was working on, obviously to get it just right - but it took hours and hours of syncing each part. It’s a great resource and has had very many downloads. I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas - we have lots of great topics for 2012!

Christmas Worksheets at PencilStreet.org

I had a good day shopping in London yesterday - managed to get a day off! But … seeing all the Christmas lights going up and the department stores selling decorations it made me realise it wont be long until it’s “that time of year again”!

You must be thinking about all the things you have got to get done before the end of term. Have a look at the dozens of Christmas resources on Pencil Street – everything from Christmas cards and Christmas decorations to educational Christmas worksheets the children can get on with while you do a million and one other jobs!

There is going to be even more Christmas themed worksheets for teachers to use on Pencil Street than last year.

Meanwhile have a great half term. I hope you manage to relax!

Remembrance Day Teaching

As a teacher, whose husband is the President of the Haywards Heath Branch of the British Legion, I felt it was very important to design a wide range of high quality teaching and learning resources and worksheets for KS1 and KS2. Pencil Street Resources.

Remembrance Sunday is a very meaningful time of year for this generation of children, especially as they listen to news of our troops in Afghanistan and Libya. They are eager to find out as much as possible about the significance of 'buying' their poppies.

We hope our worksheets will provide an insight into army life and do justice the work of the British Legion.

Pencil Street's Autumn 2010 News

New developments this summer have been some of the big history topics: World War II, Fire of London, Ancient Egypt, Florence Nightingale, Romans and Celts, toys old and new and The Victorians.

Coming up in the development schedule from September to November 2010: Guy Fawkes, Minibeasts, Ancient Greece, The Tudors, transport and traffic, role play areas, dinosaurs, Britain since 1948, Remembrance Sunday, as well as the development of 600 new resources in Numeracy, Science and Literacy. Then we will be extending our Christmas resources.
